The original artwork of Abraham and his son were drawn in charcoal by Australian artist Aaron Burfield, who was commissioned by Dan El for this project. The Tael is traditionally an Eastern Oriental weight measure with a history that predates the Qing Dynasty circa (1644 – 1912). Over the centuries taels were made in both silver and gold of various weights and shapes. The shapes often contributed benefit as per the “boat” shape which allowed the taels to be “stacked” or the “donut shape” with a hole in the middle so they could be threaded for safekeeping. Coinage of this era in many countries utilised the “hole in the centre” system to minimise the risk of loss which remains a relevant consideration today. The Eastern Oriental gold Tael weighs 37.5 grams and is internationally recognised as an investment grade precious metal form that clearly possesses the character of precious metal. Dan El has adopted this “donut shape” but utilised the more familiar western imperial weights being 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce and 1/4 ounce.

VALUE BEYOND THE TANGIBLE

Given to Moshe (Moses) on Mount Sinai in modern day North West Saudi Arabia, these “Tablets of Stone” or Sinai Tablets carry the inscribed declarations that have for millennium established prudent boundaries and guidance for peaceful co-existence and order. They remain one of the most significant and unique documents of all time.

Our solid silver Sinai Tablets will take their rightful place as a valued artifact heirloom to be transferred from generation to generation. Valuable for the wisdom they offer in daily living… valuable as a symbol of a sound spiritual foundation and heritage… valuable as a remembrance of the Living God, but also for the intrinsic value of the “stone” selected by Dan El to replicate these two tablets.  Being crafted from solid 999 silver will ensure that these artifact heirlooms will not be hastily discarded but will remain in safe custody within a family for many generations as a visible daily reminder of our accountability and responsibility toward both God and our fellow man.

The Dan El Sinai Tablets have been skillfully milled from two billets of solid 999 silver and are packed securely in a shock resistant satin lined box. A pair of white cotton gloves are provided so that the tablets can be handled without skin acid tarnishing their luster.

Although the phrase “Ten Commandments” appears three times in the English translation of the Hebrew Torah, (first five books of the Old Testament), the word “commandments” does not appear in the Hebrew in reference to the tablets of stone given to Moshe on Mount Sinai in approximately 1313BCE. 

In all three Old Testament references we read in the Torah that God wrote on the tablets  “aseres hadevarim” which correctly translated is “ten statements” or “ten declarations.”

The word often translated “command” or “commandment” in English Bibles is the Hebrew word “mitzvah.” The root of the word “mitzvah” is “tsavah” which means “to direct” or to show or point out a path. Hebrew scholars are quick to remind us that the Torah lists 613 Mitzvah not 10, and that the 10 “statements” or “declarations” given on Mt Sinai serve as a summary of 10 categories under which all 613 Mitsvah can be safely assembled. This interpretation becomes clear when one looks at the first of the ten statements which is clearly not a commandment, but a declaration.

By no means does this lessen the substance of these ten declarations, rather to the contrary it emphasizes their significance in that God would not only claim authorship of the document but would hand write it on his own stone tablets and hand them to Moses. It has been pointed out that the first five statements address man’s relationship to God, and the last five address our relationship to our fellowman… an invaluable guide to life. 

Much research has been accomplished in an attempt to ascertain the form the Sinai Tablets could have taken in order to reproduce this downsized version of the “Tablets of Stone” given to Moshe upon Mt. Sinai. There exists however obvious conjecture as to the exact appearance of these two tablets and such speculation will continue until the “Ark of the Testimony” is discovered, but archaeological diggings in the nineteenth century has given us a clue as to the form the Sinai Tablets may have taken.

The “Mesha Stone” (or “Moabite Stone”) dates back to approximately 853 BC and was discovered in 1868 by F.A. Klein, an Anglican medical missionary.  Found in ancient Moab (modern day Jordan) this stone is on view in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The particular events recorded on this “Mesha Stone” can be read in some detail in 2 Kings chapter 3, but suffice to say the Mesha stone tablet is a traditional indication of how literature was published and preserved millennia ago in the Holy Land.

The English translation of the Torah states that these two tablets were written on both sides, which we have reproduced in our replicas. This is also indicated in the Hebrew text which states that the writing was “inscribed from both their sides.” It should be noted that there is an alternative and fascinating view. The traditional Jewish understanding of the phrase“inscribed from both their sides” is that the Ten Declarations written on the two tablets may not have been written over “4 pages” but rather the letters could have been engraved through the entire depth of the stone, and were therefore noticeable on both sides of the tablets. The appearance of this effect would be more like laser engraving penetrating through the stone from one side to the other. This would certainly ensure the words could never be erased or altered.  The English script chosen for these replica Sinai Tablets is a translation of the traditional Hebrew text, and the divisions of the ten declarations is also based on Hebrew understanding.

We are told that the original Sinai Tablets were destroyed by Moshe in a fit of rage, however the Hebrews later obtained a replacement, only this time Moshe was to cut the blank tablets himself and then cart them to the top of Mount Sinai where God would do the inscribing again. After his first experience, one can only wonder if Moshe, accepting his imperfections and not wanting to embarrass himself before God again, chose a less brittle stone particularly after receiving detailed instructions from God re the importance of gold, silver and bronze in the tabernacle construction. As there appeared to be no specified inclusion or prohibition on the stone to carry the Ten Declarations, could Moshe have considered making the blanks from a different type of stone?

The stone chosen by Dan El to carry this most significant and unique document is silver; solid 999 silver.  Weighing 150 troy ounces each, which is approximately 400 shekels of silver per tablet, these two tablets are intrinsically valuable and warrant close examination by all who value history and truth. To offer perspective to this weight measurement, 400 shekels was the weight of silver Abraham used to buy the burial cave and surrounding field for his wife Sarah. In modern weight measure 400 shekels is the equivalent of 146.6 troy ounces, or 4.56 kilograms.
